What Is This Site Anyway?

Posted by FoodProof on 1-29-09 in The Official FoodProof Blog with 3 Tiny
We've been asking ourselves that question a lot lately. We've been out of beta for about six months now, and we've learned some things about the ways we all tend to use FoodProof.

For one thing, we can do a better job of showing you new cool stuff to look at. Lots of people come to the site through big photos like the Bacon Roll (which over 475k people have seen!) or long blog posts like Chris's Tool Talk, but they leave soon after, because there's nothing sort of punchy and immediate for them to click on next. To fix this, we've added a big column on the right which collects the most recently Hand-Picked stuff. We hope this column will allow us to spotlight the stuff that we think is particularly great, so that new visitors to the site can quickly jump there.

Also the homepage is really static. Some weeks people post lots of photos. Some weeks we get more recipes. Sometimes we get a ton of new links posted, but they're so far down the page that it's a pain to scroll there. Our solution to this issue is the Digest View, which is now the default way to view the homepage.

Things in the Digest are sorted according to recent activity. If a piece of content gets a new comment, or a significant update to its interestingness, it'll get bumped up to the top of the homepage. This way, we'll be able to more easily keep track of the forum topics and recipes and other things that are receiving the most attention, and we'll be able to more easily surface old cool stuff to continue our conversations.

That's about it for now. Thanks again for hanging out here. It's great having you, and we hope you're still having a fun time with FoodProof.

Heidi · Hey I like it!   My only suggestion would be to make the icons a little more eye candyish (such as for the recipes, etc)

mct · Yeah it's true, it needs to look catchier. But it's hard because it's going to be seen so many times, since people don't always upload photos with the recipes. I worry that almost anything will get boring, but I'll see what I can come up with.
