Reuben Omelette

These are not words that one typically expects to see together. Yet as I sat there in Madison, WI, staring at the menu board on the other side of the room in Mickie's Dairy Barn, there it was. Nestled unceremoniously in between the griddle cakes and the french toast, as if it was a culinary breakfast concept that deserved no more attention than a plate of hash browns.
After the initial shock wore off, I finally figured out what this must be. A reuben is nothing more than a well dressed corned beef sandwich. And corned beef is also famous for its use in another morning meal staple: Hash. Obviously this was a hash omelette, probably with some swiss thrown in for good measure.
I was wrong.
What was delivered on my plate looked normal enough, but as soon as it found itself savaged by my fork, it unleashed its true nature. Corned beef, yes. Also swiss. Then I saw the sauerkraut. As I sat for a moment visually digesting what I was about to put in my mouth, something started leaking, slowly, out of the freshly opened tear. Something... orange.
They did it. The maniacs actually did it. They put Thousand Island dressing inside an omelette.
One wonders what madness must transpire across the course of a persons lifetime to have this be the final result.
Delicious madness, that's what. Despite all expectations, everything actually works well together. The substitution of eggs for rye bread might seem an odd one, but strangely, it works (though a side of rye toast would not have gone unwelcomed). All in all it was a pleasant surprise, and certainly worth seeking out if you ever find yourself stranded in Madison
