Hello from reddit!
I was supposed to have started on this blog a bit before I left, but as always, shit got complicated and here we are at the start of day 3 with no updates at all. We will be updating you on our gastronomical adventures as often as we can, but I have the feeling we will always be in catch-up mode.
I have already had a few odd and tasty experiences in the world of food. And most importantly I could share them with friends. Sometimes against their will.
After a day spent recovering from all the drinks FoodProof bought for us the night before (what, you suckers are writing on here for free?!?) Dan invited us out to his favorite taqueria in the San Fransisco Bay Area, El Farolito in East Oakland. It was pretty packed due to the Mexico vs. Honduras World Cup qualifier, but we unfortunately walked in right at half-time. No futbol fun for us.
Looking over the menu I knew I would like this place. The choice of meats for your taco or burrito ranged from carnitas, chicken, and carne asada to beef head, brain, and tripe. Of course I had to try the brain. I am no stranger to eating delicious grey matter, but I had never had beef brain and I had certainly never had it in a burrito. When I ordered it the waitress told me they were all out, so I settled for beef head instead.
Or so I though. Turns out they brought me the brain burrito anyway, which made me pretty happy. Also, I didn't tell my travel companion Tom about the switch and tricked him into eating a large bite of moist, fatty, soft cow brain. He may never forgive me or recover fully. The flavor was quite sedate compared to most taco meats, disappointingly bland actually, but this was remedied by the wide selection of salsas they had. I really enjoyed the burrito, it might be the best I've ever had, but this was really due to all the other ingredients. I enjoyed the brains, but I don't think they they are ideal as a burrito filling.
More to come soon, hopefully we will be eating some strange and interesting dishes in NYC today.
