FoodProof Coffee Challenge - Result #3

For my third installment of the FoodProof Coffee Challenge I will talk about my 3rd and probably last order from Blue Bottle Coffee.  This time, based on a number of suggestions and comments I had received I ordered their blend called Three Africans

From the suggestions I received and Blue Bottle's description I had high hopes:

"This coffee is a blend of Ugandan and two different Ethiopian coffess and produces a big, chocolately aroma, and excels in either the French press or the Mokka pot. Unlike some of our Ferry Plaza Farmers' Market specials, which tend to be nichey and polarizing, this blend has a very easy-to-like personality, good body, unthreatening complexity, and reasonably clean aftertaste. We love Ugandan coffee here at the BBCC, as long as there are mitigating influences. The Ethiopian - Yirgacheffe and dry processed Sidamo - clean up the slightly off raisiny aftertaste inherent in the Ugandan, leaving a subtle imprint of dried blueberries and cardamom. A fairly dark roast, this African blend will take milk or cream quite well. Some say damn well."

I received this coffee once again by mail, and was very excited to open it up and give it a try.  This time I was excited enough that I made a video documenting the process

Again, I am doing this challenge to compare to previous coffee drinking experiences in my life, but more-so to compare against the previous coffee in this challenge.  So far I have reviewed Blue Bottle Coffee's Belle Donavan, 100% Yemen and now Three Africans.  To highlight my experiences with this blend, I will quickly go over the week in which I drank this pound of coffee, and then I will again use my regular questions.

This week I opened the pound of coffee with very high hopes and started right into it.  The first sip was very pleasurable.  It seemed slightly fruitier than the previous blends which was cool, but it really didn't get me excited for my next sip.  The aftertaste was not nearly as memorable as previous blends either which I found surprising.  This was a weird brew in that as the week went on, I was not excited for my morning cup of coffee.  That being said, I was supremely bummed when the pound was gone and I had to go back to the regular lucky bought brand.

Do I want it the next morning?
  - Sure, but only because I want coffee every morning.  Yes, I want it more than my regular cup, but way less that the 100% Yemen.

Do I want a second cup?
  - Surprisingly not really.

Does it make me feel warm all over?
  - No.  Actually, it didn't make me feel warm at all.

Does the bottom of the cup taste the same as the top?
  - This was the only blend I found that did not.  I brewed it exactly the same as the previous, but found that the aftertaste at the top of the cup was much more pleasing and less offensive than the bottom.

Am I sad when my cup is done?
  - Only because I knew how much I paid for this pound, and what I could have gotten for the same amount.

Will I order it again?
  - Nope, no way.

To briefly summarize, this coffee was good, and I can see how a lot of people really love this.  As a whole, it was pretty inoffensive.  But, this coffee did not make me feel like a bad ass.  That sounds lame I know, but the 100% Yemen, and really even the Belle Donavan did make me feel like a bad ass.  They both left me feeling supremely smart for spending this money on coffee.

Now, I need a bit of guidance here because I want to continue this series but am not sure what to move onto.  Does anyone have any favorites that I should try?

lara · Well, this is probably down a big step, but I quite like the O Organics Mountain blend (?) from Safeway. For a fancier try, how about Mr. Espresso, purveyor of fine coffees throughout the East Bay?

Aimee · "fairly" dark is usually not dark enough for me, and i'm generally not a huge fan of african beans, but three africans is still in my top three.
