Eat Real Food Festival Day 1
Last weekend at Jack London Square was the first annual (hopefully) Eat Real Food Festival. The idea was to get a bunch of local food vendors (markets, restaurants, street food trucks, etc) together and make it accessible to everyone. Nothing we had from a food truck or cart was over 5 dollars.
The festival started with Ice Cream Friday, entirely devoted to ice cream, gelato, and sorbet. It was impossible to taste them all but I have a few favorites I will share. Sadly I did not get to try the goat milk ice cream from LaLoo's
because they didn't have samples and my funds were limited and mostly going to the whims of my children. I had to be picky. But I am very curious as I love goat milk yogurt.
Fenton's, an Oakland institution that you may have seen in the film Up, was there selling scoops for a dollar and all of it going to charity (I did not take notes* so I don't know which charity).
This was great for the kids. Most kids, anyway. Mine want the exotic stuff. Anyhow, the first thing we tried was a pistacchio ice cream from Scream.
It was definitely one of the best things there. I was accompanied by fellow Foodproof friend Gwen and I believe this was her top pick of the day. It was rich and creamy. It alone is worth the trip to scream. Plus it's called Scream. It's fun to say.
I had a most amazing candied meyer lemon with ginger snap cookie ice cream sandwich. It was so good. I could go on for hours about the goodness of it. But, sadly, I can not tell you where it was from because the cart had poor signage.
I can't find a hint of their name anywhere except that little tiny ice cream cone on that one sign. I can't read it though. Maybe Gwen will remember. Edit to add that Gwen did come through for me. the sandwich was from Ici on College Avenue. The ice cream was rich and lemony without being sour or overly sweet. Every once in a while you get a bit of the candied lemon and it was like a little surprise. The cookies were thin, crisp, and probably one of the best ginger snap cookies I've ever had. It's a shame I can't tell you who they were.
My very favorite of all, and my kids favorite, was the pluot gelato at
Geleteria Naia. It tasted exactly like pluots! Exactly. Not too sweet or too tart or too anything. It was like biting into a pluot but better because it was gelato. I also sampled their whiskey gelato and if I had not had to drive home I may have eaten a few scoops of it. Whiskey gelato would never have occured to me but it was my second favorite of the day. Amazing.
Maybe it's a tie between all of these things. I wish every friday was Ice Cream Friday. I really can't wait for next year!
Day two review coming soon!
*I tried to get all of this information from the festival website but it is down already. Next time I will know better!
