Buffalo Bill's Pumpkin Ale

So first of all, a quick hello to Reddit and a thank you to FoodProof for helping to sponsor our Fantastic Voyage. Over the next month, I'll be traveling across the country and blogging about my meals here.

I figured I'd get started with a topic near and dear to my heart, beer

Fall is nearly upon us, and that means that the seasonal Pumpkin Ales can't be far behind. And Buffalo Bill's is a brewery that makes one of my favorite summer seasonals, Orange Cream Ale. So, having been already suitably impressed with their ability to produce an enjoyable fruit beer, I was excited to try their Pumpkin offering, and I wasn't disappointed.

The problem I have with most pumpkin beers is that the spices used (typically cinnamon and clove) are overwhelming, overpowering any flavor contributed by the beer itself or imparted by the pumpkin.

The Buffalo Bill's pumpkin ale has a much lighter spice flavor that allows the beer and pumpkin to shine through, resulting in a sweet, light, crisp finish. Also, unlike most pumpkin beers, it's not cloudy at all, and additionally has no head retention or lacing to speak of (which is a tad disappointing).

All said and done, Buffalo Bill's Pumpkin is a crisp, easy drinking beer that's a great example of the style and worth a try for pumpkin beer lovers everywhere.

Tom Caster · There's no reason why it wouldn't, though to be perfectly honest, when somebody sets out to make a pumpkin ale, they're typically trying to recreate the pumpkin pie experience, which means lots of spices and residual sweetness.

I'm not sure if other squash beers would be quite as enjoyable, unless you wanted to get clever, with something like zucchini bread beer... which sounds awesome. If you'll excuse me, I need to go break out the brewing kettle...

Tom Caster · Both this beer and the Elysian Pumpkin Ale, The Night Owl, do a much better job of recreating a pumpkin pie flavor than most other style competitors on the market, which tend to over blow the spices, masking any sweetness in the beer and generally just blowing the balance of flavors.

So I guess, to answer your question, yeah, it kind of does ; )

applepie · This reminds me of Galco's Soda Pop Stop, which is like Willy Wonka's factory for soda and beer.

He only has the unique soda flavors (including Rose, Mint Julep and Cucumber) online for ordering though, but I bet he carries beers just like this!

Thanks for the great fall party idea! I look forward to trying this out.

papa al · For those of us who have been around the craft brewing industry for a while, Buffalo Bill's Pumpkin is an icon. A trip to the original pub in Hayward, CA is like being an Elvis fan visiting Graceland. Cheers!
