The Beer in Review: Hitachino Nest Red Rice Ale

Posted by mct on 3-13-08 in Thinking About Buying Some Meat with 8 Tiny
Had this with my lunch at 'wichcraft the other day. Lots of flavor there. I think I'd the RR once before but usually I drink the "regular" Hitachino, whichever that one is. I will ask my friend Mike — who has spent some quality time with the Kiuchi Brewery's beers — about that one's name.

I don't remember how this beer tasted, really, so I am going to re-post some reviews from real beer dudes on beeradvocate.com, and then review those reviews.

wagenvolks from Raleigh, NC:
"The taste is a flavorful mix of seaweed wraps, sticky rice, gummi-bears, citrus hops, and saki."

mct from Oakland, CA:
Bullshit. You're just free associating. Plus you misspelled sake.

maudite from Oakland, CA:
"Sweet smelling, very earthy and hard to pinpoint any specifics. I think I was just too jazzed."

mct from Oakland, CA:
Hey, a local boy! What does he mean by "too jazzed"? Is that like being skunky or faced? I like "in one's cups" too.

Pegasus from Florence, TX:
Drinkability/note: A most excellent and enigmatic example, as befits a Belgian ale style brewed in Japan. Well worth the effort to obtain. Many thanks to BA HardTarget for generously sharing this rare example.

mct from Oakland, CA:
What's weird is that beeradvocate.com is full of stuff like this. Like every single comment is self-serious and intellectualized, and everyone is tasting strawberries and everyone is mouth-feeling each other up. And this particular beer (the Red Rice) has 150 reviews! I'm clicking through these pages, looking for like, one guy who doesn't play the dumb beer language game.

Anyway, here's one more. This pretty much sums up all of my mouth-thoughts:

vitriola from Fruita, CO
A sanguine tinged liquid accented with a snow white dollop of foam fills the glass. Delicate aromas escape - Junmai Ginjo sake, rice flour, and a soft fruitiness prevail. More sake than beer. Curious. Wow! The flavors, once again, scream Junmai Ginjo sake: elegant, a touch of tart starfruit and sweet kiwi, rice noodles, and a beautiful, subtle bitterness adds the final facet to this shining gem. What a perfect combination of subtlety and bravado.

And here's my review:
Hitachino Nest Red Rice Ale is, in a word: Good.

Owen · MCT - you didn't get the saki (sic) thing? And you call yourself a beer reviewer?I had one question - do you know if it is a JUST rice beer or if they use rice and barley and all that?

mct · OK so sure I tasted the sake but I don't call myself a beer reviewer anyway! And it sounds like they use pilsner and flaked barley malts, and some crazy hops called hallertauer

wagenvolks · So let me get this straight...you go around critiquing others' reviews, but offer no substance of your own?  Next time you try a new beer and feel the need to be a total douche, give the whole "free associating" thing a try--you'll be surprised what flavors you can pick up when you don't just gulp down your beer.

mct · Cool moves, wagenvolks! I get it: stuff tastes like other stuff. It's fun and easy to think and talk about.

But I think you're still a bit crooked here: I don't go around. I hang out on my blog. Beeradvocate.com is a place where people can use their language as fruitily as they like to describe the alcohol they like to drink. For me to post a comment on that site would be truly douchey, because they're just having a good time.

And since you came around, the internet mellow here at FoodProof has gotten a little harsher, you know? It looks like you signed up just today for a bit of morning trolling.

Anyway welcome to the site, and keep on gulpin'.

dan · I love that you sat at your computer this morning, ran out of stuff to do, opened google, typed in "wagenvolks" and made it all the way to page 3 of results, didn't like what you saw, signed up and actually commented on a post that was over a year old.  You should check out google alerts, that way you can make sure to actually be relevant while making an ass out of yourself.

wagenvolks · "For me to post a comment on that site would be truly douchey, because they're just having a good time."

<-- I see what you did there. But there's a difference between "having a good time", and dumping on other people without their knowledge for all your blogger friends.

Sure, BeerAdvocate reviewers can get a little creative and, at times, the language may seem flowery, but that's just a product of the reviewing process (Again, I suggest you try it sometime!). And if you were to spend a few extra minutes there, you'd find that the main purpose of BA is to advocate good beers like Hitachino's Red Rice, which your post clearly does not.

wagenvolks · Hmm...nice thought, but I'm not that narcissistic. The beeradvocate servers were actually hacked yesterday, so I was searching for a google cache of my username + "Beeradvocate" so that I might access my profile page & save a hard copy of my recent reviews.
